South Delta Bathymetry

Background

The DRMS team members determined that the current topographic and bathymetric data for the Delta is incomplete and out of date. The geometric representation of the Delta and surrounding areas should be improved. The areas that may be flooded during high flows or sea level rise have not been well represented to date. This project attempts to address the current bathymetric data gap. The project covers areas of Old River, Middle River, Grant Line, and other nearby channels shown in Figure 1.

Project Description

DWR conducted underwater bathymetric surveys in the summer of 2011 using boats equipped with special multibeam sonar sensors which produce detailed topographic data of the riverbed and riverbanks that cannot be obtained by conventional survey methods. The data provides an image of the levees underwater structure and are used for hydrodynamic modeling input data. The following Bathymetric measurements have been completed and are available by contacting Joel Dudas at (916) 651-7002 or jdudas@water.ca.gov.

The surveys completed in 2011 are:

  • Middle River – Woodward Canal to Railroad Cut (B1)
  • Middle River – Union Point to Woodward Canal (B2)
  • Middle River – Railroad Cut to Connection Slough (B3)
  • Victoria Canal

DWR MAKES NO WARRANTIES, REPRESENTATIONS OR GUARANTEES, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, AS TO THE COMPLETENESS, ACCURACY OR CORRECTNESS OF THE DATA, NOR ACCEPTS OR ASSUMES ANY LIABILITY ARISING FROM ITS USE.

The additional surveys to be completed prior to July 2012 are:

  • Old River/West Canal North of Clifton Court Forebay (A)
  • Grantline Canal (F)
  • Woodward Canal (C)
  • Old River adjacent to Coney Island
  • Old River South of Delta Mendota Canal
  • Burns Cutoff
  • Perimeter of Mildred Island
